Reader Mode In Chrome For Mac

The awesome Reader Mode feature will almost certainly end up in the former camp, but for now remains experimental. Reader Mode works on the same principle as the similar feature built into many desktop browsers, such as Safari on a Mac, as well as that in popular bookmarking apps like Pocket or Instapaper. Then, find the 'Enable Reader Mode Toolbar Icon' in the list, either by scrolling through (it's about halfway down), or by using the 'find in page' option in the Chrome menu Enable the feature, then tap the 'Relaunch Now' button that pops up at the bottom to reboot Chrome. Google Chrome is recognized as the best Internet browser these days. Reader is an important tool in a browser. Actually, Reader feature helps in reading or viewing online Webpages contents without page ads and disturbance. This is not the case for Chrome, maybe because dark reader is better optimized for it or because safari loads pages faster on Mac than Chrome. I tried switching dark reader to ‘fast mode’, but in this case many pages may remain white or make images inverted.

I miss Safari’s Reader mode’s ability to cut down on website cruft, for example Medium’s banners.

But I really don’t like Safari otherwise.

Can I get Reader mode in Chrome? How? I tried chrome://flags/ but no luck.

getting Open in Safari option in Chrome’s Share menu would be OK as a workaround. Right now it’s copy url, open Safari, paste url.

Firefox is my main desktop browser but not interested in it on iOS. I’d prefer Chrome be extended to perform this function, but I’m open to any and all third party browsers that can emulate the Safari reader mode function.

Firefox For Mac

Someone suggested I use Workflow to address another question I had.

And it occurred to me that I could use it here as well (you'll need to be at least on iOS 11.x - Workflow is much, much, less powerful on 10.x.

You need to create an Action Extension workflow, set it up to only accept URLs and then choose Open in Safari as an action.

You may also need to enable Workflow in sharing.

configuration screenshots

Here's a rough series of screenshots, from when you've launched Workflow. Sorry, it's a little bit complicated and fully detailing each step in the series would take a lot of little dialog screenshots, but hopefully you'll get the idea.

Jul 25, 2015  No version of Word for Mac is mentioned. Word 2016 for Mac does not have the Focus View provided in Word 2011 or anything comparable to the Full Screen Reading feature in the various PC releases. Right now, the MS web sites are in a state of flux, & IMHO they've put the proverbial cart way ahead of the horse. Mac reader mode for word The “Read Mode” is for changing the layout of a document for better and easier viewing. To activate “Read Mode” for the current document, click the “View” tab. Using Word 2016 for Mac Focus Mode to Reduce Distractions. You can launch focus mode two ways: (1) go to the View tab then click Focus, or (2) click the focus mode icon on the status bar.

Also, keep in mind iOS 12 is apparently replacing Workflow with Shortcuts so there might be another way to do this later.

Final result:

The upshot is that I can pick Workflow in Sharing, then my Workflow, which I've saved to Safari.

Update:

confusingly it seems as if Shortcuts is only a rebranding of Workflow, so my instructions apply to it as well.

Last, you Firefox Focus has an open in Safari option.

This is actually even easier now. In fact, the new Shortcuts Gallery has an Open Safari Reader shortcut that you can use out of the box. It is pretty slick.

Thanks so much for asking this question, I’ve been looking for this ever since Safari Reader View came out.

I just wish the individual Shortcut itself could be one of the Sharing widgets rather than the extra step of clicking Shortcuts and then the Open Safari Reader icon. I thought having a Siri phrase might help but it doesn’t seem to pass the URL. When I am viewing a webpage in Chrome and use Siri to run the shortcut it just goes to the Shortcuts app but doesn’t successfully hand off the URL.

Re: reader mode in Chrome

Dennis,

Adobe reader dc for mac ipad. IT CAN ONLY BE USED WITH STANDALONE VERSIONS OF ACROBAT AND ADOBE READER. THIS TOOL IS NOT FOR USE WITH ANY CREATIVE SUITE PRODUCTS INCLUDING SUITES THAT CONTAIN ACROBAT.

There is, technically, a reader mode built into Chrome but using it is a bit clunky.

In order to activate it you have to go into the properties dialog for the Chrome shortcut and add a command line argument at the end of the first edit field.

If Google Chrome is on your desktop, point to it and press alt-enter to open the properties dialog. At the end of the first edit field containing the path where Chrome is located add

--enable-dom-distiller

and press enter.

As an example, my edit field reads

'C:Program Files (x86)GoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe' --enable-dom-distiller

Don't change the path to match mine in case your copy of Chrome is located in a different folder. The above is just an example of how the edit field should read.

In order to get to the Reader view, press alt-F, from within Chrome, for the Chrome menu.

Arrow down and you'll find a Distill Page option, which opens the page in Chrome's reader view.

The above method is, in my opinion, unintuitive and inefficient.

What I've resorted to is the Mercury Reader Chrome extension from the Chrome store. Once you've installed this extension and, presumably, other ones which are similar, you can go into the extension's settings and set up a hotkey to invoke the reader extension. For Mercury, I've set up ctrl-R to render the page in the Mercury reader view.

Hope that helps.
