If you or your workforce is switching from computers using Microsoft Outlook for email to a Mac system with Mac Mail, Thunderbird or another mail program, you'll most likely have to convert old emails from Microsoft's proprietary EML format to the MBOX archive standard. If you have access to a Windows system, you can do this with the free program IMAPSize; if all you have is a Mac, you can still use the simple eml2mbox script, which is written in the Ruby programming language that comes preinstalled on Mac OS X.

Using IMAPSize

1.

Download and install IMAPSize (link in Resources).

2.

Run IMAPSize, open the 'Tools' menu, then click 'eml2mbox.'

3.

Click 'Add Files,' then navigate to and select the EML files you want to convert.

4.

Enter a filename for the new MBOX file, then click 'Convert.'

Using Eml2mbox

1.

Download eml2mbox (link in Resources), then double-click the downloaded archive to open it and drag the 'eml2mbox.rb' file to the directory containing the EML files you want to convert.

Open the Terminal application, located in the 'Utilities' subdirectory of the 'Applications' folder.

3.

Change to the location of the EML files by typing 'cd [path]', where 'path' is the path of the EML directory.

ruby eml2mbox.rb

This tells Ruby to run the eml2mbox script, which automatically combines all the EML files in the directory into an 'archive.mbox' file. You can convert files in other directories to archives with other names using this code:

ruby eml2mbox.rb [/path/to/eml] [archivename.mbox]

Here, the first parameter is the location of the EML files, and the second is the desired name of the archive.
