Sharing an external drive between a Mac and a PC under Leopard There are two ways to share an external drive, i.e. A FireWire® or USB 2.0 drive, between a Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard® and a PC running Microsoft® Windows®: physically or over a local network. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for any disk that you plan to use with Time Machine or as a bootable installer. Will you be using the disk with another Mac? If the other Mac isn't using High Sierra or later, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Rakesh Shewale writes with a common question about formatting compatibility: I bought a new external HDD for my mac about a month ago and formatted it to Mac OS X Extended Journaled.
So everywhere I've read I've been told I should be able to at least SEE the drive - at least get stuff off of it using other programs.
I've tried all of these tips here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-read-mac-formatted-drive-windows/ and none of them work. The drive will not show up for the programs. However, it does show as mounted to the computer (just not available in windows explorer) and if I open disk management tool is shows up there.. but strangely, as an NTFS drive? Not sure what that's about.

I'm at a loss now and could use some help. I have a 2 TB hard drive that is useless because I can't erase. An 80GB backup of all my photos is sitting on there and I just want to move it off, reformat the drive, and return it. I do access these photos now and then so I definitely don't want them gone.

Right now I can borrow a mac for 3 hrs from my library but the data transfer from one drive to another (using the mac to see everything) takes about 9 hours.
My only option unless I find a solution is to transfer individual folders of photos over by hand in 3 hr chunks. I'd rather keep this as my last resort. Portable cd reader for mac book pro does not.
